Send off, the late Nathan Okori Adiyo, raise controversial among 55 grandchildren and 155 great-grandchildren.
Anita Amongi celebrated the death of Oulanyah Jacob by kneeling on the grave.
OMORO DISTRICT-TUESDAY, MARCH 31. 2026.
By Okumu Livingstone Langol, Our Correspondent
On Tuesday, March 2026. The burial of Muzee Nathan Okori Adiyo was held at his ancestral burial ground, the Okarowok clan. The late Muzee Nathan, 97 years old, was laid to rest beside his son, Jacob Oulanyah Okori Lanywen, the Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
Bazar happened a day before the burial, Anita Amongi meet Oulanyah ghost kneeling on the grave on Friday March 30, Nicholas Opiyo, Human Rights Activist, why Anita Amongi? Was she disrespecting the grave of a deceased person? This is sacrilegious and an abuse of the cultural respect we bestow on our departed.
Rwot Ksimiro Ongom, Rwot of Patongo, our people, both young and old, I want to address you regarding my sister Betty Ocwee, informing us of the incident of the Speaker Anita Amongi kneeling on the grave of the late Jacob Oulanyah. I want to thank Betty Ocwee for telling us what happened.
In Acholi traditional Culture we respect the dead; no one should tamper with the dead body when a loved one passes on from the hospital. While transporting the dead body, it should not be taken to any home. But it should be taken directly to their home.
No one should play with the dead body or display the casket for their own interest. It should be buried according to Acholi tradition; if anybody died his or her remains should be observed for 24 hours before burying him or her.
After the burial. The grave of the dead should be accompanied only by relatives, lowering the remains in the grave, the head must not touch the side of the grave, or the remains must not be dropped in the grave.
Putting on flowers must be strictly by relatives, not even friends should be allowed to put flowers on the casket, because some evil people may drop a charm in the grave, no object should be allowed to be buried with the dead body. After the burial, the grave of the deceased should be observed for years, the vigilant must be maintained so as not to allow dogs, frogs, or anything not be present on the grave.
During funeral services, some meals like Malakwang or Otigo should not be entertained, or allowed to be eaten during the burial.
Therefore, Anita Amongi must be called to answer the taboo she broke on the grave of the late Jacob Oulanyah. Why did she kneel? It means that she is responsible for the death of Jacob Oulanyah. Anita Amongi obongo wang kwac abuto. She was waiting for Nathan Okori to die, and she did witchcraft.
Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, I would like to exonerate the late Muzee Nathan Okori Adiyo for sending his children to school, and embraced a government program in Omoro District. Here stands the legacy of his hard work as Cotton farmer, educator and Counselor for Acholi District way back in the 1960s.
Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, the Omoro MP, asked Hon. Jean Ruth Aceng to uplift Lalogi Health Centre IV to District Hospital, citing a one hour drive to Gulu City, a distance of 42 kilometers due to bad roads. While travelling to Agago District Health Hospital is a thug of war, since the Minister for Health Jean Ruth Aceng is here, she will be able to help us implement President Museveni’s promise to upgrade Lalogi Health Centre IV to a level of District Hospital.”
I remembered the late Muzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, last year 2025, during the National Resistance Movement Primary party election, he asked my daughter, Hon. Lamwaka, I want you to fulfil the dream of the late Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah dream to tarmac Moroto road. The late Oulanyah is no more. When is the Moroto road going to be tarmac?
I had no word to answer him, I had to lie, but I have to tell him the government will tarmac Moroto road, Hon Lamwaka commented.
“Is good that Dr Jean Ruth Aceng is sitting here with her, she will answer demands from the Omoro community, who are asking that Lalogi Health Centre IV should be upgraded to District Hospital, our patients have to drive for an hour to reach Gulu Regional Referral Hospital, or drive to Agago District Hospital “, Hon. Catherine Lamwaka stressed.
Gen Charles Otema Awany, (Lutua me Omoro), my people of the community, how are you? We are celebrating the good legacy of our father, Muzee Nathan Okori Adiyo. He lived with us, the Acholi community and the Lango community, without creating an enemy among his people. He was born an upright person, never engaged in trivial differences, and he brought peace and unity between the two ethnic groups.
“Where is Hon. Andrew Ojok Oulanyah? Come here. Hon Andrew Ojok came. You remembered during the last election on January 15, 2026. When there was a misunderstanding between you and Ben Acellam, I called all of you. And I told Ben Acellam to leave the matter between the late Oulanyah Jacob and him. Do remember when Ben Acellam wept, and you also wept. If Muzee Nathan Okori Adiyo had not passed on, I was going to summon Ben Acellam and you before the late Nathan. It’s bad that he passed on before ironing out issues between you and him.”
Hon. Norbert Mao, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, was called in. Hon. Mao, we are celebrating the legacy of the late Nathan Okori Adiyo, we honored him with big numbers of mourners who turned up for his send off, five bishops that is why I sneaked quietly.
We thank God for the life of Nathan Okori, 97 years old. You mean you are given 27 years on top of the 70 years? The other day, emeritus Chief Justice Owiny Dollo asked God to give him another 30 years. When President Museveni was handed the microphone. Jokingly, only Emeritus Chief Justice Owiny Dollo asked God for that 30 years ago.
Turning on, when I heard that Nathan Okori died, I had to ring the Speaker Anita Amongi, informing her of the passing of the late Nathan Okori. For you, you think we don’t talk.
“For you politicians here, you don’t think we don’t talk, I talk with the speaker Anita Amongi. If Iran and the USA are still talking, then what about us, without guns?” Hon Norbert Mao made mourners laugh heartily.
Stressing, I am appealing to opticians, let us not talk dirty, and let us clear the politics. I talked to President Museveni, informing him about the demise of the late Jacob Oulanyah. He sent UGX 15 million, and later I passed it to Hon Andrew Ojok Oulanyah.
Is very difficult to see this large number of MPs coming to, they are informed, if you are a leader, it’s not only voting that makes you a leader, those who lost the election for the first time, they should not cry, for me, I lost the election twice, the presidential election is not a mere parliamentary election.
Francis Mawa Okello, emeritus Puranga Prime Minister, reasons in Acholi cultural norms, no one is allowed to kneel on the grave, or even sit or sweep the grave with a broom, or whipper at the grave.
The Speaker Anita Amongi, kneeling on the grave of the late Jacob Oulanyah, has done an abomination, which is taboo; she did it at a time when the late Muzee Okori, the father of the late Speaker, died. Which means she has come to me kwanyo tipo pa Oulanyah, “Which means he is behind the dead.” Mawa Okello argued.
