𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐢 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐚 𝐋𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐏𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚–𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, have ushered in a new phase of Uganda–Tanzania energy cooperation with the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening regional energy infrastructure and economic integration.

President Museveni, who is on a two-day working visit to Tanzania, was received by President Samia at State House in Dar es Salaam.

The two Heads of State held bilateral discussions focused on deepening the longstanding relations between their countries before witnessing the signing of the MoU between the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) and Vitol Bahrain E.C. for the joint development of the Tanga Regional Energy Hub.

The agreement builds on the strategic partnership established through the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) and seeks to position Tanga as a regional center for petroleum storage, logistics, trading and distribution.

The initiative will complement Uganda’s oil and gas developments, including the planned 60,000-barrel-per-day Hoima Refinery, while enhancing energy security, expanding regional trade and supporting sustainable economic growth across East and Central Africa.

Uganda’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, Dr. Monica Musenero, described the partnership as a significant milestone in advancing regional industrialization and shared prosperity.

She noted that feasibility studies for a refined petroleum products pipeline and storage terminal are expected to be completed later this year, while studies for a natural gas pipeline linking Uganda and Tanzania are scheduled for completion by October 2026.

She also highlighted progress on the Uganda–Tanzania 400kV electricity interconnector, with Uganda securing US$250 million in World Bank financing for its section of the project.

Tanzania’s Minister of Energy, Hon. Deo Ndejembi, welcomed the agreement as a natural progression of the cooperation established under EACOP, noting that the Tanga Regional Energy Hub has the potential to attract investments exceeding US$20 billion.

He emphasized that the Tanga Hub and Uganda’s Hoima Refinery are complementary projects, with a proposed bidirectional multi-product pipeline expected to facilitate the efficient movement of refined petroleum products in response to regional market demand.

The day’s engagements concluded with President Samia hosting President Museveni at a State Luncheon, reaffirming the enduring friendship and strategic partnership between Uganda and Tanzania as the two countries continue to pursue transformative initiatives that promote regional integration, energy security and shared prosperity.
