In the past, the Elephants could be trapped by using a snare hole dug and planted spear or hanging trap spear that can kill the Elephant while coming to drink water, or during their grazing period. But these days the elephants have developed more advanced techniques that can detect all the traps, whether poisonous chemicals are planted in Pumpkin and pray to deadly elements.

Nyeko Charles, 70 years old, from Agung acknowledged that in the past elephants used to terrorize community who live along or near Murchison Wildlife Game Park, when they are approaching the villages you can hear the grumble of their stomach when it produces sharp sound, you would know that the elephants are coming.

Delphine Anek narrates that upon surroundings they will open the roof and all of them will push their hand and begin to feast.

Patrick Ojok from Okwii Ywaya village, also says one day the elephant attacked his Soyabean garden, in the process to scare the beasts, he started blowing vuvuzela to chase them. “If you want to see how the elephant is clever like human beings, when one elephant is killed, all elephants will pitch camp and mourn the loss of the loved one until the caucus of the dead elephant gets rotten and they will leave the place.” Odwar Joseph noted.

Francis Ojok, 36 years old, a Game Ranger from Murchison Game Park, says the elephants are wiser than human beings. If you want to know that the elephants can remember their trace of knowledge for more than 500 years and know their roots. Elephants follow the path which was used sometime back by their ancestors.

Lutuku/Temo road is a 67 kilometers road that starts from Olwiyo/Pakwach road.

The Temo –Lutuku 47 kilometers road was the route followed by the elephant, and these days the elephants still follows when they are coming to the community. The elephant’s knowledge and IQ is more than human IQ, it means the man-made AI cannot be compared to the elephant’s IQ.

Ocaya Laconyi recounted that one day the group of 6 elephants came and invaded to acres of Soybean, the elephant first line up and took position from the far end and started eating soya bean while advancing. His mother and other fellow women were making ululation and banging empty tins blowing whistle without the responses from the beasts.

“I came with my younger brother Obwot Wellborn with logs of fire, we run toward them, and the elephant took off, that was then 10 years ago. However, these day. Ojok Francis says the elephant gets the aura smell of food crops from the water when the elephant is drinking water, they get the aura of crop plantation. Francis Ojok, says.  “In the past by the time people came back from IDP camps, they were blowing horns, Vuvuzela, beat the drum, and blew the whistle. Blanker guns were short to scare the elephants, including fire, even if the gun is short in the air the elephant will never run. But these days when we use those scarecrows, the elephant will in turn fight back by chasing the people.” Ojok Patrick admitted.

Nyeko Pyro Paul, 86 years old, has a wonder inside how the Nwoya Community were fighting back elephant invasion, he said in the past traps like snails were used to kill elephants, Chemical poison were used to kill the elephant.

“We used to put chemical poison inside Pawpaw and Pumpkin, we cut pawpaw into two and placed chemical poison inside and later we covered it well, but when the elephant smelled the pawpaw instead of eating it they threw it away. Even a snail which is ironed on timber and when the elephant steps on it, the nails will get stuck on the elephant foot, the elephant will not move a long distance. The beast will die. Nyeko Pyro Paul said.

Francis Ojok, Game Ranger from Nwoya village says the problem of elephant’s invasion will come to pass when an electric wire fence is built surrounding the park.

Human Poaching will cease when the electric fence built to control poachers, and Uganda Wildlife Authority started Social cooperative responsibility to the community who live and defend of poaching.
