UGANDA: FORMER BISHOP JANANI LUWUM WIFE DIES, BURIAL SET IN KITGUM

It was all sombre in Uganda and the protestant faithfuls at the wake of the news of the death of Mary Luwum, the widow of former Archbishop of Uganda Janani Luwum.

Mother Luwum, 93 years old succumbed to cancer of the gall balder from International Hospital Kampala (IHK) on Tuesday 6th August. She is survived by seven children.

 

On Tuesday afternoon, Stanley Ntagali the Archbishop of Church of Uganda issued a heart moving statement over the death.

 

He described the late Mary Luwum as a fathful witness to her lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ for many years that inspired many like her husband, the late Bishop Janani Luwum.

 

‘’Mama Mary has been a faithful witness to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ for many years. Like her husband, her testimony has inspired many and will live on. We commend her to her Lord and pray for their family and all who grieve her passing’’. Ntagali wrote.

 

Ntagali disclosed that Mary Luwum will be remembered as not being ashamed of the Gospel by supporting her husband`s decision to not flee Uganda when threatened by then President Idi Amin, a decision that ultimately led to his martyrdom on 16th February 1977.

 

A programme from the family and Church of Uganda reveals that Mary Luwum will be laid to rest in Kitgum district on Saturday 17th in Wii Gweng Village, Mucwini Sub County Kitgum district the final resting place of her late husband, Janani Luwum.

 

Rev. Canon Aaron Mwesigye the Director of Ethics and Religious Affairs in the office of the president has announced that government will foot the bill for the funeral programme.

 

Mary Luwum is an icon of peace and religion in Uganda looking back at her brutal husband murder by Idi Amin which consequently the latter regime until its collapse.

 

The church and government as well as family members have rallied all Ugandans to emulate the deceased who stood for the pillars of the church.
