He began whipping me with this big bundle, a story from New York Tines

“He began whipping me with this big bundle of old, dried leaves,” Ann said, her eyes wide, her hands up to shield herself from the invisible whip.

“And he’s chanting under his breath – dundun dun dun dun dundunnn – when right outside the shack, his two wild dogs start howling into the wind.”

I listened as my friend Ann – not her name – told our enraptured group of friends about a shaman she and I had seen in Mexico the month prior.

I listened… in wonder.

She and I had had the same experience.

Same place, time, date, shaman.

But she had come away from it with a killer story that had everyone hooked.

I now remember her experience with the shaman better than I remember my own. Hers had detail, color, motion. Exactly zero boring parts.

I could have told a similar story.

I should have.

But she’s practiced in telling stories.

I’m practiced in writing them.

And as writers we sometimes get too in our heads about storytelling.

So I made this video about storytelling for you.

8 principles to start applying today.

Not to tell the perfect story asap.

But to start telling stories, period.

So that eventually we all become expert storytellers like Ann.

And keep our audiences hooked.

So they like us, agree with us, wanna do business with us.
