Justin Obol Simple man, Chairman Gulu District Local Government late last month June 2026, during one-on-one interview revealed that Pece stadium project designed is to bring historical Gulu City to international standards to accommodate 15 thousand spectators after the construction is completed.
However, there is need to rally behind the support of the National Sport Council to contribute funds in order to support the construction to international standard since Pece memorial ground has more than 20 acres of land, compare to Gulu University stadium, where Gulu University has allocated 11 acres of land only to construct 15 sport stadiums.
“I have visited the construction site at Pece Acholi war memorial ground, I instructed the constructor to expand the stadium,” but when pushed to explained how, just by talking to the constructor, or it meant ” put deep into the pocket,” Gulu District Chairman ran to explain.

According to construction design, Uganda People Defense Forces (UPDF), Engineering Brigade is undertaking the demolition and modernization of the stadium, the purpose for rehabilitating Pece stadium is being rehabilitated to serve as an official training ground for the teams competing in the 2027, African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The project scope; construction involves upgrading the pitch, stands and surrounding infrastructure to be confederation of African Football (CAFÉ AND FIFA”.
On April 4, 2025, the government of Uganda announced the building of a sports facility worth UGX 13 billion, this is in line with the government of Uganda’s interest to build a training sports ground at Gulu University through the National Council of Sports .
On June 9, 2026, Ambrose Tashobya, approved the handover of Pece war Memorial, he revealed that Pece, which initially meaning those Acholi World War I and World War II men who died they will never come back alive. “Pece” the Sport Council promised that PECE will be constructed, upgraded into a world-class facility and will serve as one of the training hub.
Meanwhile Gulu University also under sport facility worth UGX 13.5 billion is constructing Gulu University stadium for 15 seat for the Cup of Nations Players who might after landing in Gulu City through Gulu Airfield yet to be rehabilitated into International Airport. Th construction is ongoing by the same UPPDF Engineering Brigade
Technical Officers including Surveyors, Engineers and Environmental experts from the Ministry of Works and Transport led by Emilu Martin on the 3rd of April 2025 visited Gulu University to do fact- finding on the availability of about 11 acres of land to support a multibillion sports facility at Gulu University.
Emilu Martin and his team were welcomed by Prof. Davy David Okello Owiny the Deputy Vice- Chancellor Academic Affairs of Gulu University.
Prof. Owiny assured the team from the Ministry of Work and Transport that Gulu University has the required land to ensure that the facility is build immediately.
Okot Stephen Workorach, the Gulu University Estates Officer led the team to where the land is and showed them the university master-plan that already had the provision of a stadium.
This is in line with the Government of Uganda’s interest to build a training sports ground at Gulu University through the National Council of Sports. This sports facility worth UGX 13.5 billion is expected to help African Cup of Nations Players who might after landing in Gulu city through the Airfield could wish to stay and train in Gulu before going to Lira City that has Akii -Bua Stadium.
Uganda has joined other East African Countries in co-hosting the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 and is committing to renovate and build many sports facilities across the country.
